INTRODUCTION
Our team explored various infill housing strategies for single family neighbourhoods in the City of Kelowna, BC Canada. The challenge was to provide multiple units with access to both shared and private outdoor/flex space, a variety of potential suite mixes for flexibility and multi-general living, as well as optional income generation through lock-off rental units – all on a single family lot with front access.
Two unique proposals were ultimately developed for the competition: “The Kelownas” is an evolution of the triplex with private parking and roof patios for each unit, and “The Kelowna Special” proposes a novel housing configuration organized around a “flex garage” and shared outdoor space. The two strategies utilized different approaches to providing private vs shared spaces, acknowledging the varied preferences of each individual owner, developer, and resident. Both designs incorporated high performance building envelope and resilient xeriscape landscaping.
